Caring for your Weehuggers

A two-sized adjustable nappy cover, ideal for prefolds, inserts or even disposable nappy pads

Before using the diapers: wash and dry your diaper & inserts once in hot or warm water prior to first use. This causes the fibers to shrink, fluff up and become more absorbent. It is not necessary to wash more than once before using the diaper for the first time. The inserts will shrink and get thicker with the first few washes. This shrinkage has been allowed for when designing the inserts.

If you bought several diapers, you may want to pre-wash one first as we can only refund on unused/unwashed products.

General Wash & Care: Keep your wet and dirty diapers in a diaper pail. If you've stuffed the inserts inside the diaper, shake out the insert into your pail and throw the diaper in after changing your baby.

Wash your diapers & inserts in warm water on regular cycle. Follow the recommended amount of detergent as stated on the soap's packaging based on your load size. Too much will leave residue causing your diapers to possibly stink, leak, or leave baby with a rash. Too little will not leave your diapers clean and cause it to stink and/or leave baby with a rash.

An additional rinse can be used for particularly soiled loads. Make sure that your diapers are rinsed clean. Any residue from poop, urine, or detergent can make your diapers smell. Tumble dry on warm or line dry.

Do not use fabric softener. It will coat the inserts making them water repellent and reduce its absorbency. Be aware that if you use dryer sheets in your dryer for other laundry this can coat your dryer and transfer to your diapers.

Do not use bleach. This includes Oxyclean or other oxygen-based bleach. These laundry additives will cause the fabric's fibers to break down. It will also cause the waterproof layer of the diaper to de-laminate. Do not use baking soda or vinegar in your wash. These are unnecessary and may cause problems in your diapers.

Do not stretch the diaper while it is still warm. Allowing the diaper to cool after taking it out of the dryer will extend the life of its elastic.

Do not use diaper rash creams without using a protective liner between your baby's skin and the insert. Creams will leave a waxy residue on the fabric making them less absorbent, water repellent and may potentially cause leaks. If you need to use a rash cream, you should use a stay-dry liner or a piece of fleece between your baby's bottom and the insert to prevent the cream from transferring onto the diapers.

Stain removal. If staining occurs, it is important that any products used on the inserts and covers to remove the stains are mild so as not to irritate the baby’s skin and/or cause the diapers to prematurely deteriorate. In most cases, laying the stained diapers out in the sun is the safest and most effective way of removing stains.

Summary of the Do's and Don'ts and things to try

* DO wash your diapers on warm and dry them on high heat. The heat helps kill bacteria.
* DO use 1/4 - 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent. Detergent residue can cause diaper rash and can affect absorbency.
* DO protect your weehuggers™ from wear and tear by securing the hook side to the loop side before washing.
* DO turn your weehuggers™ inside out before washing. Highly recommended for getting your all-in-one diapers extra clean and helping the sewn-in soaker pad dry faster.
* DO bleach out stains with natural sunlight. It really works!
* DO store your dirty diapers with the "dry pail" method.
* ... AND DEFINITELY DO use diaper change time to bond with your baby!

the don'ts

* DON'T use bleach. It will break down the natural fibers in your diapers.
* DON'T use fabric softener. It will adversely affect absorbency and cause your diapers to repel liquids.
* DON'T let your diapers sit in the dirty pail for more than 2 or 3 days.
* DON'T leave your clean but wet diapers in the washing machine overnight. This can encourage mold growth.
* DON'T use a air-tight sealed storage bin for dirty diapers. The smell seems to concentrate. Not a very pleasant experience.
* DON'T use "wet pails" to store your diapers. They are potentially dangerous to babies.
* ... AND DON'T EVER leave the room or turn-away from your baby on the changing table.... even if the restraint is buckled! You never know what day your baby may learn a new trick (like wiggle out of the restraint or unlock the buckle).

stuff you should try

* TRY a cold pre-rinse to remove solids. Especially helpful for breast-fed babies' diapers, when solids don't have to be removed before washing. A cold pre-rinse is believed to prevent stains.
* TRY an additional rinse cycle. Great for removing detergent residue. Recommended for extra sensitive bottoms!
* TRY drying your diapers on a clothing line to save energy. Throw them in the dryer for a minutes to fluff and soften them, if necessary.
* TRY using your washing machine for a pre-soak. If you absolutely must use the "wet pail" method, we recommend using your top-loading washing machine as the pail. Spin out the water before washing.
* TRY Calgon® water softener. If you have hard water, your diapers may not be clean enough. Extremely helpful if dealing with odor issues.
* TRY Grapefruit Seed Extract. Great for disinfecting. Place 6 drops in the final rinse water. Especially recommended after bouts with sickness or diarrhea.
* TRY flushable, biodegradable rice paper liners. A quick and easy way to deal with solid waste.
* TRY a personal mini-shower. These are easy-to-install spray hoses that attach to the water line on your toilet and help you easily rinse off solids.
