Instructions on using and caring for your
nappies are not routinely sent with orders as many people do not require
them with every order. However, copies are available if requested. Please
state in the box at the checkout what information you require (i.e use
or care or both).
Care of your Swaddlebees nappies
The following instructions are based on the manufacturers' care information.
Caring for your Swaddlebees pocket nappies is easy, but there are a
few do's and don'ts to maintain their condition.
Please don't expect top performance
from organic cotton velour-lined nappies until they have been washed
at least three times to remove the natural oils.
Pocket diapers with Polyurethane Laminate (PUL)
outer layers should be washed and dried on hot (60ºC)
before using. This will help seal any needle holes left in the PUL during
construction.
1. Remove a wet nappy and simply shake the nappy insert out of the
pocket into your dry nappy bucket or storage bag and throw the nappy
in. If the nappy is soiled stretch the fleece over the loo and gently
shake any solids into the toilet. If the nappy is still very soiled
you will probably find this will rinse off by putting the washing machine
through a cold pre-wash rinse cycle, though you might prefer to rinse
it off by hand - hold a corner of the nappy FIRMLY! and flush. Put the
nappy and nappy insert into your dry nappy bucket.
2. On wash day I recommend running your Swaddlebees nappies through
a rinse cycle in your machine without detergent before washing.
3. Wash using a 40ºC wash cycle and cold rinse. Use only a
1/4 - 1/2 of
the recommended amount of detergent to prevent build up of detergent
on the fabric. There is no need to soak Swaddlebees.
4. Ideally hang your pocket nappies to dry outside or inside in a warm
place, but not directly on a radiator etc. They will dry in a few hours.
You can tumble dry them but use the lowest heat setting to maintain
their condition. If you tumble dry you nappies please
allow them to cool after drying them. Stretching the elastic while they
are still warm can lead to elastic failure.
5. To make Swaddlebees even easier to use store them ready-stuffed
with an insert.
A few DON'Ts
Caring for your nappies properly will keep them looking and performing
their best. Below is a list of things that can harm your nappies and result
in leaks.
- Don't use a nappy barrier or balm cream
with these nappies- it will leave a greasy residue on the stay dry inner
which is very difficult to remove. If you want to use a cream because
of severe nappy rash use our thick nappy liners to prevent cream getting
onto the nappy or switch to a different nappy system to preserve your
Swaddlebees pocket nappies.
- Don't use any bleach products Bleach
is a strong chemical and will break down the fibres in your nappies.
- Don't use fabric softener It will
coat the fabrics, making them water repellent and will cause leaks!
Be aware that if you use dryer sheets in your dryer for other laundry
this can coat your dryer and transfer to your nappies. If you encounter
leaks with your Swaddlebees nappies, try hang drying instead.
- Don't dry on HOT or HIGH HEAT!
The PUL layer (waterproof outer) is meant for warm or low heat
only! Preserve the life of your nappies by following this recommendation.
A few tips
- Do wash your nappies after every use (i.e. do not add fresh insert
to a used pocket nappy).
- Natural-type detergents and soaps are not recommended for nappies
containing polyester because of the soap build up they leave. This build
up can cause repelling, leaks and rashes in sensitive skin. Cloth nappies
do not require much detergent and too much can leave residue on the
fibres, possibly causing your nappies to smell, leak, or leave baby
with a rash. 1/4 - 1/2 the recommended amount per load should be sufficient.
If you find they are not being cleaned properly, check that your machine
is not blocked. If your machine is fine, try adding a cup of soda crystals
(available at your local supermarket) to the wash. This is a very cheap,
effective and environmentally friendly detergent. It softens water (and
hence nappies) and should bring your nappies up beautifully clean.
- Soaking dirty nappies (in a bucket filled with water & disinfectant
or detergent) is not necessary. A dry nappy bucket with a tight fitting
lid or a staorage bag works fine.
