Real Nappy Week 2006
2006 saw the 10th Anniversary of Real Nappy Week, which was the
biggest national cloth nappy event yet. This
is an annual event aimed at raising awarenss about cloth nappies. Due
to the relative invisibility of cloth nappies, many parents do not realise
that modern cloth nappies are a realistic option, even with today's
busy lifestyles. Real Nappy Week usually features publicity events such
as "nappy mountains" (where the equivalent of one baby's disposable
nappies through their entire nappyhood are put into bin bags to show
what a huge amount of waste they produce, compared with a carrier-bag
full of washables) - this amounts to a pretty impressive mountain!
Nappy advisors in Wales
needed
Waste Awareness Wales and Sustainable Wales are working in partnership
to co-ordinate the Real Nappy Campaign in Wales. The campaign aims to
promote awareness of the benefits of using real nappies. It is widely
recognised that having an enthusiastic local person with experience
of using cloth nappies and knowledge about what is currently available
helps inform local professionals and mothers about real nappies and
get them started using them. BabyKind have partnered with the Real Nappy
Campaign in Wales to recruit and support local nappy consultants around
Wales. If you are a real nappy enthusiast and would like to find out
more about this scheme please contact us.
Council real nappy incentive schemes
It is local councils who ultimately have to deal with the disposable
nappies produced by their newest residents, and as the space left in
landfill sites dwindles it is at a premium. Many councils now run real
nappy incentive schemes and actively encourage parents to make the switch
from disposables to reusable nappies. Your local council may offer a
cashback incentive if you choose reusable nappies, so if you are unsure
it may be worth contacting your own council to see what they are offering.
We will be building a list of council incentive schemes over the coming
months. Click to see if your local council
has a real nappy incentive scheme. Please let us know if you know
of a scheme that we have not yet listed so we can pass on this information
to other parents.
