Care of pocket nappy inserts
Pocket nappy inserts can generally be cared for in the same way as
your pocket nappies. Bear in mind that microterry inserts are best washed
and tumble dried on hot once before the first use to 'fluff them up'.
Inserts made from natural fibres (hemp, cotton or bamboo) will generally
take a few washes until they reach their maximum absorbency. Normally
wash at 40ºC, or 60ºC
if heavily soiled or for an occasional wash. Hang to dry or tumble dry
(temperature according to the manufacturers' instructions).
Hemp Inserts
Hemp inserts may be made from completely natural and unprocessed hemp
fabric and must be washed 2-3 times prior to first use (no need
to dry between washes) and then, ideally, tumble-dried once on hot.
This will remove any residues, boost their absorbency and shrink them
down to the correct size. They will continue to gain absorbency over
the next few washes. Because hemp is a dense, absorbent fibre these
inserts tend to be slower drying. Ensure that they are thoroughly dried
before use by hanging somewhere warm with good air circulation and you
could consider tumble drying to finish them off.
As with other natural fibres, after repeated washing hemp fabric can
become a little stiff. If your nappies get 'hard'
here are a few things that will soften them:
- rub the fabric together
to fluff them up again
- if you normally hang dry, tumble dry for the
first 10 minutes before hang drying
- most effective and eco-friendly of all, catch
some rain water and soak your nappies in it before spinning and drying
as usual!
- add soda crystals to your washing routine - these soften the water
- use a commercially available water softener to soften your water
for washing
Microterry Inserts
Wash and dry before the first use. Then store and wash with your pocket
nappies ~ store dry, wash at 40ºC or 60ºC and hang to dry
or tumble on a low heat setting. Microterry inserts, unlike cotton
or hemp, will remain soft even in hard water areas or after many washes.
