Care of bumGenius V4
Caring for your bumGenius nappies is easy, but a few simple do's and
don't will help to maintain their condition.
1. Take off a wet nappy, remove the insert and put it into your dry
nappy bucket with the nappy shell. If the nappy is soiled stretch the
suedecloth, and shake any solids into the toilet. Most should just drop
into the toilet - if there is still a lot of soiling on the nappy you
will find this will rinse off by putting the washing machine through
a pre-wash rinse cycle. If you would rather clean further before putting
into the machine you can rinse more poo off by flushing the loo whilst
holding FIRMLY onto a corner. Put the bumgenius nappy shell and inserts
into your dry nappy bucket.
2. On wash day it is recommended that you run your nappies through
a cold rinse cycle in your machine before washing.
3. Wash using a 40ºC or 60ºC wash cycle and rinse. Use only
1/2 the recommended amount of non-biological detergent to prevent build
up of detergent on the fabric. There is no need to soak bumgenius nappies,
and they will last better if you don't. There is no need to hot wash
them either.
4. Ideally hang your bumGenius to dry outside (weather permitting or
course!) or inside in a warm place but NOT directly on a radiator etc.
The shells will dry in a few hours. Inserts will take a little longer,
though in a warm place should dry in a day. You can tumble dry your
bumGenius nappies if you need them quickly, but use the lowest heat
setting to maintain their condition. Always ensure the laundry tabs
are fastened on the hook and loop version to prevent them sticking to
gether and snagging.
5. To make bumgenius even easier to use store them snapped down into
the desired position and ready-stuffed with the required level of absorbency.
A few DON'Ts
- Don't use a nappy barrier or balm cream
with these nappies- it will leave a greasy residue on the suedecloth
which is very difficult, if not impossible, to remove. If you want
to use a cream because of severe nappy rash use one of our bottom
salves which will wash off nappies, or use nappy liners to prevent
cream getting onto the nappy (ensuring you use enough liners to completely
cover the nappy), or temporarily switch to a different nappy system
to preserve your pocket nappies.
- Don't use any bleach products.
Chlorine bleach is a strong chemical and will break down the fibre
in your nappies. If bumgenius nappies become stained, hang them in
the sun, it can works wonders! Failing this, use a little spot on
stain remover prior to washing, or try rubbing with soda cystals before
washing as usual (available from the supermarker, cheap and eco-friendly).
Ensure any stain remover/soda crystals are adequately rinse from the
nappy before using on your baby.
- Don't use fabric softener. It will
coat the fabrics, making them water repellent and will cause leaks!
Be aware that if you use dryer sheets in your dryer for other laundry
this can coat your dryer and transfer to your nappies. If you encounter
leaks, try hang drying instead.
- Don't wash or dry on HOT or HIGH HEAT!
Although tumble-drying is fine, do so on the "low"
or "gentle" setting to preserve the waterproofing and elastic.
The PUL layer (waterproof outer) may be permanantly damaged if you
hang bumgenius shells directly on a hot radiator.
- Don't use tea tree oil in the laundry
with pocket nappies. Whilst some people
recommend this, we have found that it may coat the nappy fibes and
cause them to repel liquid (and leak) or retain odours.
